BTW, did you know Jessica Hecht, Jim Parson’s character Elwood’s sister, the lady in the red coat, was on Friends! She played Ross’s ex wife Carol’s lesbian lover, Susan! Haha! I watching old reruns yesterday and thought to myself, damn that lady looks familiar!
I watched the movie version of this play, with Jimmy Stewart, and it was fantastic! Although it may seemed a bit outdated because it’s set in an earlier time, I think the message of this story is still very applicable today. The one thing I took from the story is taking the time to listen, put down our gizmo and gadgets, and really engage with a person in a conversation. Look at today’s technology, how we communicate, we use the internet, keep in touch via Facebook, Twitter, Etc. My phone is capable of making phone calls and video calls, but I rarely use it. I’m always texting. I kind of miss human interaction, talking to someone, listening. The best days of my summers is when I get together with old friends and literally we can spend 5 hours at Starbucks doing nothing but talking. There’s something about the experience, that no form of technology can replicate.
Anyways, I really wish there was a video of the cast in action. One thing I do enjoy about plays is that it can be played out in so many different ways. It’s one way to really see an actor/actress work. It’s hard to explain you have to take time to see it. I took a class on Shakespeare in film and in literature, one thing my professor emphasized from the start is that plays (Shakespeare’s plays) are not meant to be read, they are meant to be seen and heard. In that class we would listen to the audio on one play and watch several film versions of it and note the different ways they approached the script. Best film to really see the process of an actor is Al Pacino’s Finding King Richard. Anyways, getting a bit off topic but… I really wish I could see how Parsons never having seen Jimmy Stewart’s Harvey played Elwood. Does he still retain that great amount of innocence and sincerity that Jimmy portrayed well?
I wish I had $ to fly to NY and watch the play. Oh well, who knows.
